Janet Chaffee

Janet Chaffee was born in 1960 in Denver, Colorado.  She earned her BFA in painting from The University of Texas at Arlington in 1999 and received her MFA in painting from Texas Christian University in May 2002.  Since graduating, she has taught drawing at TCU, UTA, The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and has been in several individual as well as group shows throughout the state of Texas.  She received third place in The Dishman Competition 2005 at the Dishman Art Museum at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.  Andrea Karnes, Associate Curator of The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, juried the show.  Chaffee received first place in Invitational #44 Exhibit held at the Longview Museum of Fine Arts in Longview, Texas and juried by Anne Allen, Director of The Arlington Museum of Art.  More recently she received The Murrin Family Award in Preservation Is The Art Of The City, at The Fort Worth Community Arts Center in Fort Worth, Texas.  The awards were juried by Rebecca Lawton, Curator of Painting and Sculpture for the Amon Carter Museum.  She had a solo exhibition at The Ellen Noel Museum in Odessa, Texas in 2008.

More recently she is exhibiting with the Diamler Financial Services in fort Worth Texas and in, Intense Concentration, a drawing show featuring seven nationally known artists.  During the summer of 2010 she was awarded a Once Upon a Time Grant from Trinity Valley School of Fort Worth to attend the residency, Atlier Hilmsen in Germany. The Summer of 2012 she spent time at Santa Fe Clay in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  September 22 through January 6, 2013 her collaborative work was shown in the exhibition, Espoused, with Benito Huerta and she recently had a one person exhibition, Pentimento, in March of 2013 at Brookhaven College in Dallas, Texas.  She is currently teaching Upper School at Trinity Valley Prep School in Fort Worth, Texas.

In my work, lace patterns and imagery are combined with organic forms, dry pigments and beeswax through an intuitive process that captures the passing of time.  The lace is found both regionally and abroad, including locations in Germany, Italy and Cuba.  In addition, some of the lace has been recontextualized using medical, lace, implants originally used to surgically bind muscle together.

Lace as imagery is only part of the work.  The materials, a range of dry pigments, beeswax and oil paint, are combined in layers to incite discovery and meaning.  Calcium Carbonate, one of the dry pigments, is a common compound comprised of three elements, Carbon, Oxygen and Calcium.  It is found in pearls, seashells, limestone in streams and lakes beds throughout Texas and the Midwestern United States.  Mica, another dry pigment, is found in the Southeastern United States and is used in various products from electronics to paper.  Graphite, beeswax and oil paint are also present in the work.

The combination of imagery and materials contained within the beeswax provide the opportunity to explore chance, possibility and intuition in the work.  The fluidity and stillness of the wax allow for this work to explore implicit movement, as it becomes the custodian of past moments in time.
